CATAN is a strategic family board game for 3-4 players (expandable to 5-6) that allows you to compete for resources, build roads, settlements and cities, and ultimately achieve island dominance.
Game Objective
The goal of each player is to score 10 victory points. These points are obtained by:
Building settlements (1 point for each settlement);
Building cities (2 points for each city);
Achieving the status of having the Longest Route (2 points);
Largest Army (2 points);
Development cards may contain additional points.
Game Components
Playing Field: consists of hexagonal tiles representing different types of terrain (forests, mountains, pastures, fields and hills) and desert.
Resource cards: five types - wood, bricks, grain, ore, sheep.
Player chips: roads, villages, towns.
Development cards: contain special bonuses, such as knights or victory points.
Dice: to determine the resources the players receive each round.
Bandit figurine: blocks the creation of resources on a certain tile.
Preparing for the game
Assembling the playing field: Terrain tiles are placed randomly to form an island. A numbered chip is placed on each tile to determine when it produces resources.
Initial Placement: Each player starts with two settlements and two roads. Settlements are placed at the intersections between tiles, and roads are placed between them.
Gameplay
Dice Roll: Players roll two dice to determine which tiles produce resources this turn. All players who have a settlement or cities near an activated tile receive the corresponding resources.
Resource Gathering: Players receive resource cards based on the activated tiles.
Player Actions: A player can:
Exchange resources with other players, with reserves or harbors.
Build roads, settlements or cities.
Buy development cards.
Use development cards.
Bandit If the sum of the dice is 7, the Bandit is activated. He moves to any tile, blocking resource production and causing one player to lose resource cards.
